The new Nikon 1 J5 is a mirrorless camera with an unusual video mode; 4K at 15fps. Besides a marketing gimmick, I can not come up with a reason why they would include a video mode with a useless frame rate. Other than that, the specifications of the camera seem fine though!
Nikon 1 J5 – Specifications
Continuing from video, it’s capable of doing Full HD videos at 60fps, and HD at 120fps, making it useful for slow motion videos. Photography wise, you’ve got a 1″ CMOS sensor with 20.8 megapixels and a 20fps burst mode. Nikon also included an excellent focusing system, with 171 AF points (105 of those are phase-detection). The ISO range goes from 160 to 12,800, and it’s all powered by a new Expeed 5A processor.
It’s got a tilting 3.0″ LCD screen for difficult situations and self-portraits, and you can also snap pictures by touching the screen. There’s also built-in Wi-Fi, NFC and the ability to share your J5’s screen with a smartphone, and control it as well.
The Nikon 1 J5 starts shipping on April 30th, but you can already pre-order it at Amazon here. It’s priced at $499 with the 10-30mm f/3.5-5.6 PD zoom lens.
