We’ve already compared to the A77 II with the D7100, and now it’s time to see how the new Sony matches up against the Canon EOS 70D! Specifications wise, the A77 should be competing with the replacement for the Canon EOS 7D, but we’re still waiting on that one…

Advantages of Sony A77 II:
- 4 more megapixels. Not important unless you print extremely big
- 1 stop higher maximum ISO (51,200 vs 25,600)
- 60 more AF points
- 12 vs 7fps, 5 frames per second more!
- Articulating LCD screen with higher resolution
- 100% viewfinder coverage (what you see is what you get)
- 60 vs 30fps in Full HD resolution, better video features
- 30g lighter
- Built-in WiFi with NFC
The Sony A77 II beats most models around its price, and is even better than the Canon EOS 7D specification wise (APS-C flagship model), but it’s been almost 5 years since its release.

Advantages of Canon EOS 70D:
- 500 shots longer battery life
- Dual Pixel CMOS AF Technology (better for video focusing)
- 19 vs 15 cross-type points (the 70D uses the 7D’s AF system)
- Larger selection of high quality lenses for now
- $200 cheaper (on Amazon)
Except for the much better battery life, more cross-type AF points and a pentaprism viewfinder (works perfectly in all conditions, requires no power), the 70D can’t beat the Sony in features. Image quality wise though, these cameras are all great, and the ISO performance is on par as well. Canon also offers more lenses, but Sony is still relatively new in the game.
