After years of not much exciting news in the Rebel series, the new Canon Rebel T6i finally brings something exciting; a brand new sensor with more megapixels and a professional AF system. Let’s check out how it compares to the Rebel T5i/700D, and if it’s worth to upgrade (or buy it as your first camera).

Advantages of Canon Rebel T6i:
- 24 vs 18 megapixels and a newer sensor results in more details, but unless you’ll crop or print large, you will rarely notice any difference in sharpness (it has more to do with skills and lenses)
- 19 vs 9 AF points, and all of those are cross-type (more precise in difficult situations). We’ve been waiting on Canon for years to step up their AF game in the Rebel line, and they put the AF system of the 7D II in this little camera!
- Built-in WiFi and NFC, like all other DSLRs today
For $150 more, the Canon Rebel T6i seems like a good upgrade, but unless you have an older DSLR or don’t have a camera yet, there’s no need to upgrade from the T5i yet, and I’d recommend you to get the 80D instead. For newcomers to DSLR photography, the T6i will be excellent as it offers features from higher priced models.
