Nikon D3400 Advantages:
- Full HD at 60fps compared to 30fps on T3i
- Almost 3x longer battery life
- Almost 150g lighter body
- $100 cheaper
Image quality and noise wise, these two cameras are almost identical. The D3400’s battery life is so good that you’d have to buy 2 extra batteries on the T6i to get the same results, so this is potentially a big money saver (if you plan on shooting almost daily, or using the camera for really long trips). It’s also lighter so carrying around won’t be an issue, although none of these two cameras are heavy.

Canon T6i Advantages:
- 9 more AF points, with all 19 being cross-type (compared to 1 on the D3400), which improves the camera’s auto focus accuracy in low light conditions
- 6 vs 5fps in burst mode, it’s not a major advantage but enough to make it more useful for action and sports photography, where you try to get as many sharp shots as possible
- Articulating LCD screen is great if you ever plan on recording/photographing yourself, or for studio/landscape work. Being able to see yourself and changing settings is a huge time saver
- Touch screen LCD
- Built-in WiFi, while the D3400 has none
- Microphone jack, while the D3400 again has none (D3300 had it). If you don’t record videos, this isn’t important.
If you know you’ll take a lot of pictures in low light/difficult to focus situations, then the extra cross-type points are a big help. The 6 vs 5fps burst mode is also good for extreme sports, but both cameras will be perfectly fine for sports.
If you record yourself, the articulating screen is a big plus because you can always see how your output will look like, while doing the actual recording! Simply put, the T6i is a clear winner in video, while both cameras are almost identical in image quality.
