Nikon recently announced the D810; one single model to replace the D800 and D800E. It comes without an AA filter and brings along a lot of minor upgrades, but nothing we haven’t seen before. Canon’s only comparable model is the 5D Mark III, announced back in 2012.

Advantages of the Nikon D810:
- 14 more megapixels. Doesn’t make a difference when viewed on small monitors, but noticeable when printing large or cropping
- No AA filter; resulting in slightly sharper images
- Slightly lower ISO levels (32 vs 50)
- Slightly larger LCD screen with larger resolution
- More control of Exposure Compensation
- Full HD Video at 60/50fps compared to maximum 30fps
- Around 300 shots longer battery life
- USB 3.0 vs 2.0 for faster file transferring
- Built-in flash
It’s a bit unfair to compare two models with such an age gap between them, but until Canon announces a new model we’ll just have to wait. For now, the D810 clearly wins in the megapixel department, and most likely won’t have any serious competition yet (maybe from Sony in a while).

Advantages of the Canon EOS 5D Mark III:
- 1 stop higher maximum ISO speed
- 61 vs 51AF points
- 41 of those points are cross-type, compared to 9 on the Nikon D810
- The 5D Mark III is slightly smaller and lighter, but hardly enough to make a difference
The 5D III is a bit more appropriate for action when it comes to its burst mode and AF performance, but both of these cameras are perfect for all sorts of photography, from studio and landscape to sports.
